PYROTECHNIC TRAINING/USE TO WARD OFF BIRDS OF PREY

CITIZEN AWARENESS

The City of Greenville has been notified of nesting vultures/buzzards at a particular location off of FM499, as outlined on the map below. Vultures are scavenger birds that perform an essential task of removing dead animals. Therefore, these birds are protected by state and federal law. The laws states that you may not kill or harm these birds and must use humane methods to deter or remove them. The City purchased regulation pyrotechnics, specifically Bird Banger and Screamer Siren Cartridges, that will be fired from a specially designed handheld launcher. The materials used are not harmful to humans or animals. They do not fire bullets. They produce a very loud noise to deter birds from nesting on rooftops or near homes.
On Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at 9:00 a.m., personnel from Texas Wildlife Services will be onsite to train animal control personnel on the use of pyrotechnics. The training will last about one hour. During this time, you may hear loud bangs. There will be trained staff from Texas Wildlife Services, as well as City staff on hand to manage this training.
Also, for the next month, animal control personnel will use these pyrotechnics at the actual location of the nesting vultures/buzzards to rid/deter the birds from this area.
