A new traffic law called the Move Right law goes into effect Sunday.
The law states that drivers are now required by law to only use the far left lane on controlled-access highways when passing other vehicles. The state Dept. of Public Safety says warning tickets will be issued during the first 90 days, however after November 13, 2021, violated the law is punishable by a fine of up to $25.
Signs saying “State Law: Slower Traffic Move Right” will be placed along SC roadways.
Here are the exceptions to the Move Right Law:
when no other vehicle is directly behind the vehicle in the left lane;
when traffic conditions and congestion make it impractical to drive in the right lane;
when snow and other inclement weather conditions make it safer to drive in the left lane;
when obstructions or hazards exist in the right lane;
when, because of highway design, a vehicle must be driven in the left lane when preparing to exit;
to law enforcement vehicles, ambulances, or other emergency vehicles engaged in official duties and vehicles engaged in highway maintenance and construction operations;
when a driver of a tractor-trailer commercial motor vehicle combination is unable to move into the right lane safely due to another vehicle overtaking or passing his vehicle to the right;
or when a driver of a vehicle requiring a commercial motor vehicle license to operate is unable to move into the right lane safely due to a highway grade or another vehicle overtaking or passing his vehicle on the right.
Be ready for officers to start enforcing this law starting Sunday!
