FAIRBURN, Ga. – An ambulance driver in Georgia has been charged with driving under the influence in connection with a fatal crash Friday.
34-year-old Kevin McCorvey flipped the ambulance in the accident, which killed the elderly patient who was being transported.
State troopers say McCorvey was driving this non-emergency ambulance– a prime care EMS ambulance– southbound on West Campbellton Street.
That’s when they say the vehicle traveled off the west shoulder, causing it to flip over into a ditch.
Inside — unrestrained according to investigators — was patient 66-year-old Wilton Thomason.
He did not make it and was pronounced dead on the scene.
McCorvey admitted to investigators that he had smoked marijuana, and consumed a beer while on duty.
McCorvey is charged with DUI combination less safe, Homicide by Vehicle Second Degree, Failure to Maintain Lane and Possession of an Open Container.
A specialized collision reconstruction is recreating the accident in order to properly assess the blame for the fatal crash.
