This afternoon around 4:30 pm, the Rockwall Police Department responded to a report that a citizen believed they had been shot with a BB gun from a passing vehicle. The Rockwall County Sheriff’s Office assisted and located the suspect vehicle. It was determined the vehicle was occupied by three juveniles and the device was an Orbeez gun (a toy similar to airsoft guns that shoots round gel-based water beads.
Recently, the Rockwall Police Department has experienced a rise in these sorts of incidents, and often times they are associated with social media challenges where kids are encouraged to shoot unsuspecting victims as a prank. These devices are capable of causing serious injury and victims of these sorts of incidents may, depending on the facts of the encounter, have the option of pressing charges for misdemeanor assault or other more serious offenses. Furthermore, many illegitimate manufacturers often design these guns to mimic the look of popular firearms which can lead to misidentification of a threat by the public or police.
Parents are encouraged to monitor and discuss the use of Orbeez or airsoft guns in public. If you witness anyone using these sorts of devices in a dangerous manner or in a public place, please call the Rockwall Police Department at 972-771-7717.
