Van Zandt County sheriff’s deputy killed in Sunday wreck

VAN ZANDT COUNTY, Texas – The Van Zandt County sheriff has confirmed one of his deputies was killed in a wreck on Sunday.

Sheriff Joe Carter said Sgt. Jeremy McCoy was off-duty when the crash occurred.

As per the press release, McCoy was traveling towards the south on State Highway 198 at approximately 4:14 pm, when his vehicle collided with a truck. As per the preliminary report by Texas DPS, the truck was turning into a private driveway. Tragically, McCoy passed away at the scene of the accident, while one of his children was airlifted to a Dallas hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

In 2006, McCoy commenced his profession in law enforcement as a telecommunications operator for the Kaufman County Sheriff’s Office. Recently, he had been working with the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office since May 2022, and in September, he was elevated to the position of patrol sergeant.

McCoy is survived by a wife and four children.

DPS is investigating the crash.

“Please keep Sgt. McCoy’s family, both blood and blue, in your thoughts and prayers,” Carter said in a press release.
