Sulphur Springs, TX – On Tuesday evening, just before 8:00 PM, Sulphur Springs Police were dispatched to a reported disturbance in the 600 block of Bill Bradford Road. Upon arrival, officers encountered two males and a female in a parking lot near a black Nissan Sentra.
One of the individuals, identified as 21-year-old Marquis Lumont Bailey of Texarkana, Texas, was yelling at both the female passenger and officers on the scene. Officers noted Bailey’s hesitation in providing his date of birth and inability to recall his middle name, raising concerns. When Bailey failed to comply with verbal commands and attempted to walk away, he was detained for officer safety.
Bailey informed officers he did not possess a driver’s license or identification card. However, the female passenger, who expressed fear of Bailey, confirmed his middle name and date of birth. Although she stated Bailey grabbed her jacket during the altercation, she emphasized that he did not physically assault her.
The second male passenger alleged that Bailey had mushrooms in the vehicle. Officers reported detecting a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the car. The registered owner of the vehicle granted officers consent to conduct a search.
During the search, officers discovered a small backpack in the backseat containing a wallet with Bailey’s driver’s license, drug paraphernalia, and a glass jar with suspected mushrooms. Additionally, officers located small burnt marijuana cigarettes in the front center cup holder.
The suspected mushrooms, which weighed approximately two grams, were confiscated. The vehicle was released to its registered owner.
Bailey was arrested and transported to the Hopkins County Jail. He was booked on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance Penalty Group 2 < 1 Gram (POSS CS PG 2 < 1G).
