A routine patrol turned into a felony arrest on Thursday evening in Sulphur Springs, showcasing the diligence and swift action of local law enforcement.

Just before 9:00 PM, Officer Corley of the Sulphur Springs Police Department was conducting a routine patrol near the 1400 block of College Street when he observed a Chevy Camaro committing a traffic violation. Officer Corley initiated a traffic stop, but the driver continued driving down College Street, ignoring the officer’s initial signals.

As the situation unfolded, Officer Corley activated his sirens to prompt the vehicle to stop. The Camaro eventually turned onto Jill Lane, coming to a halt at a residence. What happened next further escalated the situation: the driver, identified as Dutarus Van, exited the vehicle in a hasty manner.

Recognizing the potential threat, Officer Corley conducted a felony stop to ensure safety. Van was swiftly taken into custody for intentionally fleeing in a vehicle from a peace officer, a serious charge that underscores the risks involved in such actions.

Following the arrest, Van was transported to the Hopkins County Jail, where he was handed over to jail staff for further processing. The vehicle was returned to its registered owner, bringing a sense of closure to the incident.
