Man Arrested in Hopkins County Traffic Stop for Drugs and Firearm Possession

Colt handgun and bag of methamphetamine discovered during traffic stop in Hopkins County, Texas

HOPKINS COUNTY, TX – A routine traffic stop on Monday night led to the arrest of a man after authorities discovered methamphetamine and a handgun in his possession.

Just before 10:00 PM, Deputy Foley of the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office observed a vehicle traveling 72 mph in a posted 65 mph zone along State Highway 19 North near FM 71. Deputy Foley initiated a traffic stop, during which the driver, identified as Juan Banuelos-Rios, exhibited signs of nervousness, including shaking hands and avoiding eye contact.

Upon further investigation, Banuelos-Rios consented to a search of his pockets. During the search, Deputy Foley discovered a clear baggie containing a crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine. Banuelos-Rios was immediately placed under arrest, advised of his Miranda rights, and secured in the patrol vehicle.

Search Warrant Turns Up 60 Grams Of Methamphetamine

A subsequent probable cause search of the vehicle revealed a Colt handgun on the passenger seat. The suspected methamphetamine, which weighed approximately 0.871 grams, later field-tested positive for methamphetamine.

The vehicle was towed from the scene, and Banuelos-Rios was transported to the Hopkins County Jail, where he was booked on charges of drug possession and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Both the methamphetamine and the handgun were photographed as evidence. No further incidents were reported during the stop.

This arrest highlights the importance of vigilance during routine traffic stops, as they can often uncover more serious criminal activity. Hopkins County authorities continue to stress the significance of public safety and their commitment to keeping dangerous substances and illegal weapons off the streets.
