One Arrested After Traffic Stop Leads To Discovery Of Stolen Gun

Hopkins County, TX — January 15, 2025

A routine traffic stop along Interstate 30 on the night of January 15, 2025, resulted in the arrest of Angel Rene Enriquez, a 32-year-old resident of Arlington, Texas. Law enforcement discovered a stolen firearm and drug paraphernalia during the stop, leading to multiple charges.

Details of the Incident

At approximately 8:28 p.m., a Sulphur Springs police officer initiated a traffic stop on a red 2014 Cadillac CTS Coupe traveling on I-30 for a suspected traffic violation. Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer reported detecting a strong odor of marijuana emanating from inside.

The driver, identified as Angel Rene Enriquez, complied with officers and exited the vehicle. During a probable cause search, officers located drug paraphernalia and a firearm behind the driver’s seat. A records check confirmed the firearm had been reported stolen in a prior case.

Enriquez was taken into custody and transported to the Hopkins County Jail without further incident.

Charges Filed

Enriquez faces the following charges:

  • Theft of a Firearm: A state jail felony under Texas law, carrying potential penalties of 180 days to 2 years in state jail and fines up to $10,000.
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: A Class C misdemeanor.

Bond details and any additional charges are pending further investigation by local authorities.

Affidavit of Probable Cause

According to the affidavit filed by the arresting officer, the stolen firearm was discovered behind the driver’s seat during the search. A field check with Sulphur Springs dispatch confirmed that the firearm had been previously reported stolen.

Angel Rene Enriquez of Arlington Texas was booked into the Hopkins County Detention Center on charges of THEFT OF FIREARM.
