Social media platform TikTok has sent out a notification to U.S. users warning of its impending shutdown due to a federal law banning the app. TikTok announced that its services will become unavailable starting January 19, 2025. The notification reads:
“We regret that a U.S. law banning TikTok will take effect on January 19 and force us to make our services temporarily unavailable. We’re working to restore our service in the U.S. as soon as possible and appreciate your support. Please stay tuned.”
Why Is TikTok Being Banned?
The TikTok ban comes after growing concerns from U.S. lawmakers over data privacy and national security risks tied to the app’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance. Despite attempts to negotiate a sale of TikTok’s U.S. operations to an American company, no resolution has been reached, leading to the enforcement of this federal law.
In a ruling earlier this month, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the government’s right to enforce this ban, pushing TikTok to take action and notify its users.
What Users Can Do Before the Shutdown
TikTok is encouraging its users to download their content before the app goes offline. The platform provides a data export feature that allows users to back up their videos and account information. Instructions for downloading TikTok data include:
- Navigate to the “Settings and Privacy” menu on TikTok.
- Select “Download your data.”
- Follow the prompts to export and save your content locally.
Users are urged to complete this process before January 19, 2025, to ensure they don’t lose their content.
What’s Next for TikTok in the U.S.?
TikTok has expressed its intention to restore services in the U.S. in the future but has not provided a clear timeline. The company is reportedly continuing its efforts to comply with U.S. regulations to resume operations as quickly as possible.
This ban is part of a larger trend of scrutiny toward foreign-owned apps, with lawmakers emphasizing the importance of protecting American users’ data from potential misuse.
