Douglas Paul Merrell Arrested in Hopkins County on Drug Charges

HOPKINS COUNTY, TX – February 14, 2025 – Sulphur Spring Police have arrested Douglas Paul Merrell, 58, on drug possession charges following a routine traffic stop.

According to the arrest report, officers stopped a green Toyota Tacoma near 900 N Hillcrest on suspicion of a traffic violation. During the stop, authorities detected the odor of marijuana, prompting a probable cause search of the vehicle.

During the search, officers located a clear plastic bag containing a crystal-like substance. Merrell reportedly admitted the substance was methamphetamine. A field test later confirmed the substance as methamphetamine, weighing approximately 1.52 grams.

Following the discovery, Merrell was taken into custody and transported to the Hopkins County Jail without incident. He has been charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance PG 1/1-B ≥1G<4G (F3).

Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
