Hopkins County, TX – Law enforcement officers in Hopkins County arrested Ernest Vanegas, 61, for possession of drug paraphernalia after a routine encounter in a local store parking lot led to the discovery of drug-related items.
According to the Sulphur Springs Police Department, deputies observed Vanegas standing in the parking lot of 817 Gilmer Street near a local business. Officers noted that Vanegas appeared disoriented and was periodically looking at store merchandise. Concerned for his welfare, officers approached and asked if he needed assistance.
During their interaction, Vanegas requested a ride, and officers, per department policy, conducted a consensual pat-down search before transporting him. The search led to the discovery of a glass pipe with burnt residue, suspected to contain methamphetamine. Further investigation revealed a plastic baggie with a white crystal-like substance, also suspected to be methamphetamine.
Vanegas was immediately placed in double-locked handcuffs and transported to the Hopkins County Jail, where he was booked for possession of drug paraphernalia. Authorities have not disclosed additional charges at this time.
The Sulphur Springs Police Department continues its efforts to remove illegal drugs from the community and urges anyone with information on criminal activity to report it to law enforcement.
