Traffic Stop in Hopkins County Leads to Drug and Xanax Arrest

HOPKINS COUNTY, Texas – A routine traffic stop in Hopkins County led to the arrest of a man found in possession of controlled substances, including marijuana and Xanax, late Tuesday night.

According to the Sulphur Springs Police Department, officers stopped a vehicle around 11:15 p.m. on March 12, 2025, near Industrial Drive East for a traffic violation. The driver, identified as Austin Castillo III, 24, of Sulphur Springs, Texas, was pulled over for a vehicle infraction.

During the stop, deputies detected the strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. A subsequent probable cause search led to the discovery of a brown bottle containing suspected marijuana and multiple Xanax (Alprazolam) bars inside the car.

Law enforcement officials confirmed that Castillo admitted the Xanax bars were obtained illegally from street sources. The total weight of the seized substances was 2 grams. Castillo was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance (PG 3, under 28g), classified as a misdemeanor.

Castillo was transported to the Hopkins County Jail and booked without incident. His bond status remains unconfirmed as of this report.

The Sulphur Springs Police Department reminds residents that all individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
