Public Intoxication Arrest in Hopkins County

HOPKINS COUNTY, Texas – Officers with the Sulphur Springs Police Department arrested a man for public intoxication after responding to a late-night disturbance on March 14, 2025.

According to the arrest report, officers were on a separate traffic stop when a woman flagged them down, appearing distressed. She told deputies that a man, later identified as Cody James Cummings, 23, of Sulphur Springs, was trying to enter her vehicle against her wishes.

As officers approached, they observed Cummings exiting the woman’s car and refusing to step away when instructed. Deputies noted a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person. The woman stated that Cummings had been screaming at her inside the vehicle and would not leave when asked.

Deputies administered a horizontal gaze nystagmus (HGN) test, which showed clear signs of intoxication, with Cummings failing all six indicators of impairment. Due to his behavior and visible intoxication, deputies determined he was a danger to himself and others.

Cummings was taken into custody for public intoxication and transported to the Hopkins County Jail. He was booked without further incident.

The Sulphur Springs Police Department reminds the public to report suspicious activity and urges individuals to drink responsibly.
