HOPKINS COUNTY, Texas – A routine traffic stop led to the arrest of a Tennessee man on marijuana possession charges in Hopkins County on March 14, 2025.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), a trooper was patrolling Interstate 30 near mile marker 131 when he observed a white 2025 Jeep Cherokee traveling 86 MPH in a 75 MPH zone. The trooper initiated a traffic stop and approached the vehicle, which was occupied by a female in the driver’s seat and a male in the passenger seat.
Upon contact, the trooper immediately detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. The occupants stated they had smoked all of their marijuana before the stop. The passenger was identified as Brandon Keith Franklin, 39, of Memphis, Tennessee.
The trooper asked both occupants to exit the vehicle and conducted a probable cause search. During the search, Franklin voluntarily admitted to possessing a “joint” in the center console. A small plastic bag containing a green leafy substance, later confirmed to be marijuana, was also located.
Franklin was placed under arrest and charged with Possession of Marijuana < 2 OZ. The vehicle was released on scene to the driver. Franklin was transported to the Hopkins County Jail, where he was booked and later released to jail officials.
The Texas Department of Public Safety reminds all motorists to comply with traffic laws and avoid illegal drug possession.
