Traffic Stop Leads to Cocaine Arrest at Hopkins County Truck Stop

On April 10, 2025, deputies with the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office conducted a traffic stop involving a commercial truck at the S Hillcrest location near Pilot Truck Stop.

The stop occurred after deputies observed the vehicle, driven by 59-year-old Dario Montenegro of Laredo, Texas, traveling in the wrong direction on the overpass at Hillcrest Drive and Interstate 30.

Deputies made contact with Montenegro and explained the reason for the stop. Following consent to search the vehicle, deputies discovered a plastic container that appeared to contain a white powdery residue.

Field testing of the substance confirmed it to be cocaine. Montenegro was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Hopkins County Jail.

The cocaine was weighed at approximately 0.14 grams and confirmed after further examination. Montenegro was booked on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance PG 1 under 1 gram, a felony offense.

He was later released to jail staff, and deputies cleared the scene with no further incidents reported.
