Hopkins County, TX — Two individuals are facing felony drug charges following a late-night traffic stop in Hopkins County on May 11, 2025.

Deputies initiated a stop on a gray Honda Civic traveling westbound on Highway 11 East near FM 1870 after observing the vehicle swerving and failing to signal a lane change. The driver, identified as Jessie De La Cruz, 46, of Scroggins, and passenger Tonia Renae Woodard, 54, of Cumby, displayed visible signs of nervousness upon contact.

Deputies requested consent to search the vehicle, which was granted by De La Cruz. K-9 unit “Axe” alerted positively to the presence of narcotics. A subsequent search led to the discovery of a clear plastic baggie containing approximately 1.33 grams of a crystal-like substance that field-tested positive for methamphetamine.

Both subjects were read their Miranda rights at the scene and denied ownership of the drugs. They were arrested and transported to the Hopkins County Jail. De La Cruz was also booked in on active warrants for DRIVING WHILE LICENSE INVALID – DL and RIDE IMPROPERLY SECURED BY SAFETY BELT-DRIVER. Woodard was booked on a controlled substance charge.

Authorities confirmed that the seized substance tested positive for methamphetamine. No further information is available at this time.

All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
