Hopkins County Man Arrested for Assaulting Family Member

SULPHUR SPRINGS, TX — A local man has been taken into custody following a reported domestic disturbance that occurred late Thursday night.

Officers with the Sulphur Springs Police Department responded to an apartment complex on Duckworth Street around 10:00 p.m. on May 15, 2025. Upon arrival, law enforcement made contact with a female victim who reported that she had been struck in the face by a male subject during an altercation.

The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Willie Ray Copeland Jr. of Sulphur Springs, allegedly used an open hand to hit the woman, causing pain and visible redness to the left side of her cheek, according to the responding officer’s affidavit. Due to the suspect’s familial relationship with the victim, the offense was categorized as Assault Causing Bodily Injury to a Family Member.

Copeland was arrested at the scene without further incident. He was booked into the Hopkins County Jail under that charge, Copeland has since been released on bond.

Authorities emphasize that all suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. This incident is still under review, and no further details have been released at this time.
