SULPHUR SPRINGS, TX — On August 5, 2025, Sulphur Springs Police Department officers responded to a welfare check at the Walmart located at 1750 Broadway St. (6:33 p.m.). Officers contacted Jonathan Lesley Hicks, age 38, and reported signs of intoxication before placing him under arrest at approximately 6:46 p.m.

According to the arrest affidavit, an officer found Hicks lying on the ground in the parking lot with empty alcoholic beverage containers nearby. During a consent search, the officer recovered a handgun and ammunition along with multiple 1.7‑oz Fireball alcohol bottles (some empty, some unopened). The officer documented six out of six HGN clues and stated Hicks was intoxicated in a public place to a degree that he was a danger to himself or others.

SSPD communications advised that Hicks has prior felony convictions. After transport to the Hopkins County Jail, jail staff discovered a small black pouch during dress‑out that contained a glass pipe with burnt crystal‑like residue commonly associated with smoking methamphetamine, according to the report.
