K9 Alert at Sulphur Springs Traffic Stop Leads to Two Meth Arrests in Drug‑Free Zone

SULPHUR SPRINGS, TX — A Saturday traffic stop resulted in two arrests near downtown Sulphur Springs on August 16, 2025 at approximately 12:27 p.m. Officers with the Sulphur Springs Police Department (SSPD) stopped a brown GMC Sierra pickup in the 600 block of Gilmer Street and requested a Hopkins County K‑9 unit after consent to search was denied, according to arrest affidavits.

The K‑9 gave a positive alert and officers searched the vehicle and immediate area. Investigators reported locating a clear plastic bag containing a crystal‑like substance believed to be methamphetamine and an unknown blue pill on the ground within the immediate area of two passengers. The suspected meth weighed about 0.47 grams with packaging.

Because the stop occurred approximately 722 feet from Austin Academic (a school), the possession charge carries a drug‑free zone enhancement. Both passengers were arrested, secured, and transported to the Hopkins County Jail. The pickup was impounded by a local wrecker service.

Arrested

Affidavits list arresting officers as Cpl. S. Whaley #205 (SSPD) and Cpl. C. Patterson #614 (HCSO) assisting with K‑9 coordination. Bond information was not included in the initial reports.
