GREENVILLE, TX — In a decisive move to uphold public safety and environmental integrity, the City of Greenville has filed a civil lawsuit in Hunt County District Court against the owner of a rural plot just outside the city’s boundaries.
The legal action follows citizen reports that led the city, in partnership with the Hunt County Homeland Security & Fire Marshal’s Office, to investigate the site. Officials discovered multiple industrial‑grade chemical containers bearing “Hazardous Waste” labels, stored in a manner inconsistent with federal and state regulations.
City Manager Summer Spurlock emphasized the action taken: “This is about protecting the health and well‑being of our residents and environment. We are committed to enforcing every protocol to make sure this behavior stops and is corrected.”
Although no immediate threat to public health was identified, the city has secured the site by gating the only entry and obtained a Temporary Restraining Order that bars anyone from accessing the area without court approval. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has been notified and remains involved.
The lawsuit seeks to compel the property owner to hire certified hazardous‑waste professionals to properly dispose of the materials in compliance with legal standards. Greenville officials underscored that residents should not expect evacuations or disruptions to public services as the site remains contained and under monitoring.
