A Massachusetts-based cannabis operator has baked what they believe to be the world’s largest pot brownie.
MariMed’s latest offering is called Bubby’s Baked, a line of bite-sized cannabis-infused treats including brownies, snickerdoodles and chocolate chip. The large brownie not only celebrated the launch of the Bubby’s Baked brand but coincided with National Brownie Day on December 8.
While using cannabis in public still remains illegal in Massachusetts, the state allows the purchase and use of recreational cannabis/marijuana by people over age 21, according to visit-massachusetts.com. Buyers need a government-issued ID, but they do not need to be residents of the state. Massachusetts is one of almost two dozen states, including Guam, where recreational marijuana has become legal.
“For many of us, homemade brownies were our first taste of cannabis-infused edibles,” MariMed Chief Product Officer and SVP/Sales Ryan Crandall said in a statement. “Bubby’s recreates and elevates that nostalgic experience, infusing full-spectrum, craft-quality cannabis into timeless recipes, for a reliable high reminiscent of simpler times.”
The massive creation is a large-scale version of what is now on sale and was made with 20,000 milligrams of THC and measures 3 feet wide by 3 feet long and 15 inches tall, weighing 850 pounds.
For context, according to Guinness World Records, the heaviest brownie ever recorded was over three times smaller. Baked without weed, the brownie on record was 234 pounds, 3 ounces and was baked in Alabama in September 2013.
MariMed’s brownie was created using a staggering 212 pounds of butter, 1,344 eggs, 81 pounds of flour, 250 pounds of sugar, 5.3 pounds of vanilla extract, 2 pounds of baking powder, 3 pounds of salt and 122 pounds of cocoa powder, according to the company.
Crandall told Newsweek in an email that it took a team of five confectioners over 24 hours to bake the 850-pound chocolate treat.
The brand’s new line of treats will be made at a much smaller scale with each serving containing 5 milligrams of THC—which is in accordance with Massachusetts state regulation, according to a statement from MariMed.
THC is the substance contained in the cannabis plant that’s “primarily responsible for the effects of marijuana on a person’s mental state,” according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.
As reported by Boston.com, the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission said packages of edibles can have up to 100 milligrams total though the product must be separated out into servings of no more than 5 milligrams.
It’s not clear exactly what the company will do with the massive treat, though Crandall told Newsweek that 20,000 milligrams of THC falls within the limit when selling to a medical patient.
