Hopkins County, TX — A routine traffic stop turned into a drug-related arrest on the night of January 15, 2025, after law enforcement officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation on I-30 near Hopkins County. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Javin Josiah Orta of Arlington, Texas, was taken into custody after officers discovered drug paraphernalia in his vehicle.
Details of the Incident
The incident began at approximately 8:28 p.m. when an officer initiated a traffic stop on a red 2014 Cadillac CTS Coupe traveling along I-30. Upon making contact with Orta, who was identified as the driver, the officer reported smelling a strong odor of marijuana emanating from inside the vehicle. Orta was cooperative during the encounter, and officers asked him to step out of the car while conducting a probable cause search.
During the search, officers discovered a small plastic container containing a “green leafy substance” lying on the top of the passenger seat. The substance was later identified as drug paraphernalia.
Arrest and Charges
Orta was immediately placed under arrest and transported to Hopkins County Jail without incident. Jail staff later confirmed that Orta was carrying an additional plastic bag containing a similar green leafy substance. While no other contraband was found during the search of Orta’s person, the evidence was sufficient to charge him with possession of drug paraphernalia.
Orta was booked into the Hopkins County Detention Center by arresting officer Corporal Green from the Sulphur Springs Police Department, on charges of Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
Orta has since been released from custody
