SLIDELL, Louisiana – A St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s deputy was killed early Saturday morning while assisting with a vehicle pursuit on Interstate 10 near the Oak Harbor exit.
Sergeant Grant Candies was deploying a spike strip just after midnight to stop a fleeing vehicle when he was fatally struck by the suspects involved. The suspects, later identified as juveniles, did not stop and continued to flee from deputies into Orleans Parish.
At approximately 12:30 a.m., the suspect vehicle collided with a New Orleans Police Department patrol unit near Crowder Boulevard. All suspects were taken into custody. The driver faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and aggravated flight from an officer.
The NOPD officer injured in the crash sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated and released from a local hospital.
Sergeant Candies had served the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office with honor for nine years. He is survived by his wife and two children.
