Driver Arrested After Stolen SUV Spotted on I-30

According to an affidavit for probable cause, Hopkins County Dispatch advised officers on November 20, 2025, that a black Mazda SUV bearing Texas license plate VDS-31** had been spotted while traveling eastbound on Interstate 30 near mile marker 104. The vehicle was confirmed as stolen out of the Dallas–Fort Worth area.

A Cumby Police Department officer located the Mazda traveling on the south service road of I-30 and caught up to it near mile marker 110. Lieutenant Gilbert arrived on scene to assist. The driver was identified as Hope Desiree Cooley, and a passenger was also in the vehicle. Both occupants were removed from the vehicle and placed in double-locked handcuffs while the investigation continued.

The report states that Cooley was read a Miranda warning and agreed to speak with officers. During the investigation, officers learned that the vehicle’s owner wanted the SUV returned and that Cooley was aware the vehicle was wanted. The Mazda, described as a black SUV, was recovered.

Cooley was transported to the Hopkins County Jail. During a search of her person inside the facility, officers reported finding a clear, crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine. The substance was seized as evidence for further testing.

Jail records show that Cooley was booked on multiple charges, including Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle (state jail felony), Possession of a Controlled Substance – Penalty Group 1, less than 1 gram, and Prohibited Substances and Items in a Correctional Facility. The arresting officer is listed as Officer D. Hathcock, Cumby Police Department.
